SUMMARY: A Deer Park family faced a hidden danger when they discovered nearly 20 pounds of spilled mercury left by the previous homeowner. The situation was serious enough to warrant a Hazmat scene, forcing the family to vacate their home for months. They lost furniture and spent significant effort to remediate the situation themselves. Despite their hardships and an official request for further testing being denied, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office and local commissioner Adrian Garcia assisted them. Eventually, testing revealed only minor mercury vapor presence, allowing the family to plan their return to the home.

The dream of homeownership quickly turned into a nightmare for the Mounts family when they discovered a hidden hazard in their new home in the College Park subdivision of Deer Park.
The situation stemmed from a seemingly innocuous container left behind by the home’s former owner, an antique repairman and stained glass artisan.

Brain-eating amoeba: Who is most often infected?

Published

on

www.kxan.com – Michael Bartiromo – 2025-07-28 13:34:00

SUMMARY: A 12-year-old boy, Jaysen Carr from South Carolina, died after contracting a brain-eating amoeba infection (Naegleria fowleri) from swimming in Lake Murray. This amoeba thrives in warm freshwater and soil, especially at temperatures above 75°F. Infection occurs when contaminated water enters the nose, leading to primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rapidly progressing and almost always fatal brain infection. Symptoms include fever, headache, seizures, and death usually occurs within days after symptoms appear. Treatment involves antifungal and antibiotic drugs, but survival is rare. Prevention through avoiding warm freshwater and using nose protection is vital. Climate change and increased awareness may be raising infection rates.
