Has Missouri had the most deadly tornadoes of any state? Here’s what data shows
SUMMARY: Missouri is tied with Mississippi for having the highest number of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history, each state experiencing five deadly events. Missouri’s notable tornadoes occurred in 1880 (99 deaths), 1896 (255 deaths), 1925 (695 deaths), 1927 (98 deaths), and 2011 (the Joplin tornado, 158 deaths). However, this data requires context since systematic tornado recordkeeping by the National Weather Service only began in 1950; earlier records rely on less standardized sources like newspapers and eyewitness accounts. Thus, while Missouri ranks high, the data before 1950 cannot be fully verified.
Throughout history, have there been a single state’s tornadoes that stand out? It turns out the numbers hit close to home. We dug into the facts to VERIFY.
