Goldenrods Feed So Many Critters
SUMMARY: Goldenrods are a favorite fall flower because they provide food for many insects and spiders as they prepare for winter. Standing in front of a patch of goldenrod reveals a variety of pollinators, predators, and other creatures. These creatures are getting ready for winter by gathering sustenance, with pollen being a vital attraction for many. Pollinators like bees feed on pollen while also feeding it to their young. Other visitors sustain themselves by capturing other sources of food found on the flowers, such as caterpillars and spiders. Patient predators like ambush bugs and crab spiders wait on the blossoms for their prey to come within reach. Green Anoles are also active in the area, snatching food from the flowers. Fall warblers may also be observed in search of food among the stems. Visiting a patch of goldenrods allows one to witness an overwhelming diversity of insects and creatures, with the show being particularly spectacular.
