‘Full of life’: Student dies after first day of basketball practice at Cy-Fair ISD middle school

His family believes school staff failed to act quickly enough, as Xavier had two inhalers but they weren’t accessible. His mother, Britney Thompson, was contacted by a friend in panic, and though medics were eventually called, it’s unclear how long it took. The family’s attorney suspects gross negligence and is considering a lawsuit. The school district has not responded to inquiries or offered condolences. Each school operates below 60% capacity but holds an A rating from the Texas Education Agency. Parents and a board member oppose closures, citing community impact, teacher-student ratios, and future population growth. Superintendent Bruce Gearing acknowledges concerns but stresses financial necessity. A final decision is expected October 9.
