Shrimp, Strategy, and Southern Charm: The Revival of Sunday Supper
SUMMARY: Sunday supper is a treasured tradition disrupted by Covid, but now being thoughtfully revived with careful planning. Key tips include inviting compatible guests to avoid conflict and checking for food allergies, like a friend highly allergic to eggs. The meal should be well-planned with at least three courses served over time to encourage conversation. Seasonal, fresh ingredients are preferred—shrimp season on the Mississippi Coast starts in June, ideal for a shrimp boil. The provided shrimp boil recipe from Max Ly of Lee International Market includes fresh Gulf shrimp, celery, onions, oranges, jalapenos, garlic, salt, sugar, red pepper flakes, and butter, with detailed cooking steps to maximize flavor and enjoyment. Expect a delicious but messy meal.

Southern Magnolia – More Than Just a Pretty Flower
SUMMARY: Southern Magnolias, iconic to the Deep South, are celebrated for their large white flowers and status as state symbols in Mississippi and Louisiana. Beyond blossoms, their attractive buds, fall cones with bright red seeds, and dark green leaves add beauty. The leaf undersides vary in fuzziness, likely aiding insect deterrence and moisture retention. Magnolias date back over 100 million years, with unique tepals adapted for beetle pollination. Their dense, leathery leaves create natural mulch supporting diverse wildlife. Long-lived and fast-growing, Southern Magnolias enrich landscapes over decades. Patience in planting them rewards us with these resilient, historic trees’ enduring charm.
