Former Workhouse Jail demolished after years of advocacy

SUMMARY: The former Workhouse Jail, long criticized for deplorable conditions including overcrowding and extreme heat, is being demolished after years of advocacy by Sharra Jones and activists. The facility closed in June 2022, following safety concerns due to break-ins. Originally scheduled for demolition in December, it was delayed due to environmental issues. The city has now begun cleanup and demolition, with future plans for the site including an animal shelter, expansion of the tow lot, or tiny homes for the homeless. The jail operated from 1966 until its closure in 2021, with reports of severe living conditions affecting inmates.

The demolition follows years of campaigning by St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones and activists to close the Medium Security Institution due to inhumane conditions, including overcrowding and reports of abuse.

Shannon County Sheriff alleges ‘orchestrated campaign of harassment and smear tactics,’  threats to life

Published

www.ozarksfirst.com – Kathryn Skopec – 2025-07-05 13:29:00

SUMMARY: Shannon County Commission announced termination of nearly all Shannon County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) staff due to a 75% budget overspend. Sheriff Steven Hogan condemned the move as politically motivated and alleged harassment and death threats. A temporary restraining order has paused deputy terminations until the trial scheduled for July 9. Commission attorney Ivan Schraeder stated the commission’s evidence will clarify the situation, disputing SCSO claims of mismanagement by Hogan. The commission argues legal flaws in SCSO’s suit and has requested a $200,000 security bond for deputies. Despite cuts, the jail and dispatch services remain operational. Hogan seeks federal investigation into threats.

Joe's Blog: Steady as the weather goes (FRI-7/4)

Published

fox4kc.com – Joe Lauria – 2025-07-04 08:31:00

SUMMARY: As the holiday weekend begins, seasonable but muggy weather returns to Kansas City, with highs in the 90s and increasing chances of rain, especially on Saturday, though coverage may be spotty. A weakening system brings moisture, so localized heavy rain could occur, but widespread storms are unlikely. Sunday’s rain chances are lower, with models hinting at more significant activity early next week. Additionally, historical data shows the 1930s were the hottest and driest decade, contributing to the Dust Bowl. This correlation between extreme heat and drought remains a key aspect of regional climate patterns.
