Former Utah Rep. Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the US House, has died
SUMMARY: Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, passed away at 49 after battling brain cancer. Her family announced the news on social media, noting she had stopped responding to treatment. Love began her political career on the Saratoga Springs city council in 2003 and later became mayor. She lost her first congressional bid in 2012 but won in 2014 against Doug Owens. Although a rising GOP star, she distanced herself from Donald Trump, notably declining to support him during the 2016 election. After losing her seat in 2018, she worked as a political commentator.

Florida appeals court strikes down state’s open carry ban
SUMMARY: A Florida appeals court has struck down the state’s decades-old ban on openly carrying firearms, ruling it unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. The First District Court of Appeals reversed Stanley Victor McDaniels’ conviction, who was arrested for openly carrying a handgun during a 2022 protest. Judge Stephanie Ray’s unanimous panel cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen decision, emphasizing historical protections for open carry and rejecting the ban’s constitutionality. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier supported the ruling. This decision reverses a 2017 Florida Supreme Court ruling and could make Florida the latest state to allow open carry, pending possible further appeals.

Stabbing on NC train: DOJ charges suspect with federal crime
SUMMARY: A man accused of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian refugee on a North Carolina train faces federal charges that could include the death penalty. The brutal attack, caught on disturbing video, has sparked national outrage and a debate on crime and public safety. Despite the suspect’s 14 prior arrests, he was repeatedly released, raising concerns about the criminal justice system, especially regarding mental competency and repeat offenders. Charlotte’s mayor urged people not to share the graphic footage. This incident highlights issues in public transportation security and is fueling ongoing discussions at the national level about crime and law enforcement policies.
Federal authorities announced Tuesday that Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., the suspect in the stabbing death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a North Carolina train, has been federally charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the DOJ will seek the maximum penalty for Brown, saying that the Aug. 22 attack was a “direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people.”
