Following bond back-and-forth, Austin murder case could get new judge
SUMMARY: A recusal hearing is scheduled to consider replacing Judge Chantal Eldridge in the murder case of Stephon Morson, accused of killing Keshawn Cage in October 2024. Morson’s bond has fluctuated, initially $800,000, then lowered to $100 due to indictment delays, later raised to $100,000, and currently $100. Eldridge expressed reluctance to release Morson but was bound by law. Defense attorneys allege Eldridge’s comments and handling of evidence about Morson causing a disturbance at Cage’s memorial show bias, requesting her recusal. Prosecutors argue the defense’s claim lacks merit, emphasizing Eldridge’s statements reflect balancing public safety and legal obligations.

Texas’ swift surrender to DOJ on undocumented student tuition raises questions about state-federal collusion
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Justice swiftly sued Texas to overturn its long-standing law allowing undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition. Texas did not contest the lawsuit, asking a judge to strike down the law within hours, surprising legal experts given Texas’ usual opposition to federal intervention. Critics argue this “collusive” lawsuit bypassed the legislative process, with immigrant groups considering legal challenges. The cooperation between Texas and the federal government marks a rare moment of unity, potentially setting a precedent for other Republican-led states to undo similar laws without legislative debate. This move raises concerns about state sovereignty and politicization of legal actions.

Affidavit: Man arrested after allegedly helping discard stolen truck used in fatal Live Oak shooting
