SUMMARY: Slugs, often disliked for their slimy texture and odd shapes, are essentially snails without shells, protected by slime that prevents drying out and aids movement. Known as Pulmonates, they breathe air and thrive in moist habitats, active mainly at night. The Carolina Mantleslug, common in the eastern U.S., lives in woodlands and swamps, feeding on fungi, lichen, and algae rather than plants. They leave distinctive zig-zag feeding marks using a radula, a ribbon-like scraping organ. While some slugs can be garden pests, Mantleslugs are harmless. Watching slugs can be calming, and encouraging children to observe them fosters appreciation for all creatures.

SUMMARY: Partners for the Arts (PFTA) and the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Music present the return of their fall event, Pops in the Park, on October 7 at 6 p.m. at Spirit Park, Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus. Sponsored by Cadence Bank, the free event features the USM Symphonic Winds, conducted by Dr. Travis Higa, with an opening by the USM Jazztet and special guests including voice faculty. Attendees can bring picnic setups, while VIP tickets offer shaded seating, charcuterie, and drinks. Proceeds support USM arts programs, scholarships, and student mentoring through PFTA.

SUMMARY: Mississippi State University’s Theatre MSU opens its 2025-2026 season with a lively adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” from Sept. 24-26, featuring puppetry and music. School shows are at McComas Hall, with an evening community performance Sept. 26. The season also includes a comedic take on “Night of the Living Dead” with a special Halloween midnight show, Feb. 18-22’s adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” and the Tony-winning musical “Sweeney Todd” in April, presented with the MSU Department of Music. Tonya Hays highlights the season’s goal to entertain, inspire, and engage the community.
