FIRST ALERT: Saharan dust, tropics update, and upcoming forecast (6/4/2025)
SUMMARY: South Mississippi is experiencing hazy skies due to Canadian wildfire smoke and a Saharan dust plume, which filter sunlight and enhance sunsets when clouds are present. Another surge of Saharan dust is expected through the weekend. A small thunderstorm moved through George County with heavy rain but limited lightning. The National Hurricane Center lowered tropical development chances off the Carolinas due to high wind shear and land interaction. The tropics remain quiet despite some misleading long-range model hype about potential Gulf hurricanes linked to the Central American Gy mechanism. The week’s forecast includes highs in the 80s-90s with hit-or-miss showers and storms, increasing next week with an approaching front.

Chief Meteorologist Eric Jeansonne has the latest on the Saharan dust, tropics update and more.

6/4 – Sam Parker's “Feeling Hotter and Hotter” Wednesday Night Forecast
SUMMARY: Good evening, South Mississippi. I’m meteorologist Sam Parker with your Wednesday night forecast. Today was pretty warm with rising humidity, making it feel hotter than yesterday. We tracked some spotty showers, mainly weakening as they moved from George County through Stone County toward northern Harrison County. Showers came from the east due to moisture from Florida, but chances will decrease overnight with calmer winds and lows around 73°F. Tomorrow will be warmer with highs near 88°F and a 30% chance of afternoon showers. The weekend heats into the 90s, with increasing rain chances late Sunday through early next week, bringing more scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Secretary of State's Office responds to social media post claiming county residents can vote in M…
SUMMARY: The Secretary of State’s office addressed social media claims encouraging non-residents to vote in Gulfport’s municipal election. While anyone can cast an affidavit ballot when voting, those who live outside Gulfport city limits will have their affidavit ballots rejected and not counted. The city of Gulfport confirmed that access to polling places is open, allowing all to vote either regularly or by affidavit. However, the municipal election commission will reject ballots from unregistered city residents after review. This clarification reinforces that only residents legally residing within the city can have their votes counted in the election.

Your vote will only be counted if you live in city limits.
