SUMMARY: Alabama Republican State Representative Matt Simpson has proposed a bill allowing the death penalty for child rapists, specifically for those convicted of first-degree rape or sodomy of a child under six. Currently, such offenders face life imprisonment without parole. Simpson argues that these crimes are irredeemable and that capital punishment could deter potential offenders. However, defense attorney Chase Deerman contends that the death penalty is vengeful and impractical. If passed, Alabama would join Florida and Tennessee in challenging a 2008 Supreme Court ruling that found such punishments unconstitutional. The legislative session begins in February.

SUMMARY: Since 1931, Morgan’s Chapel United Methodist Church has been a vital part of the Bon Secour community. In recent years, it has made a significant impact through its weekly food distribution. Every Wednesday, volunteers, led by Carol Dean, prepare and distribute boxes of food to around 120 families. The church’s pantry provides a week’s worth of food, including canned goods, meat, and fruit. Pastor Norman Brown emphasizes the responsibility to help those in need, with some recipients, like Margot Reuse, transitioning from receiving to giving back. This ongoing effort ensures families have one less worry, especially during the holiday season.

This time of year, there is a lot of giving and goodwill but Morgan’s Chapel UMC in Bon Secour does it year-round by providing a basic necessity.
