Federal judge recuses himself in Tyre Nichols case
SUMMARY: U.S. District Judge Mark Norris has recused himself from the federal sentencing of five former Memphis police officers convicted in the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols. The case is now reassigned to Judge John Thomas Fowlkes, Jr., and Magistrate Judge Annie T. Christoff. Sentencings are scheduled between June 16 and June 23. Bean, Smith, and Haley were acquitted of state charges but face federal sentences; Haley could face life in prison. Mills and Martin, who played a greater role, pleaded guilty. Sentencing delays have been requested. The move marks a potential turning point for community healing, according to attorney Van Turner.
