SUMMARY: FBI Director Cash Patel has called Memphis the “homicide capital of America” and announced plans to send a federal task force to combat the city’s violent crime. This follows a weekend of shootings, including the deaths of three people, one being a 16-year-old girl. Despite Memphis police reporting a decrease in murders this year, with 23 fewer than last year, the city continues to face high levels of violence. Patel’s task force, involving 1,500 agents, will focus on tackling violent crime in Memphis and Tennessee starting later this year.

As Memphis Police responded to a number of shootings and other violent incidents over the weekend, the city was hit with the label “homicide capital of America” by FBI Director Kash Patel. In a sit-down interview with FOX News on Sunday, Patel said Memphis leads the nation in homicides per capita and vowed to deploy a federal task force to Tennessee.

Some education grants in limbo were used for ‘leftwing agenda,’ Trump administration says

Published

wpln.org – Tony Gonzalez – 2025-07-03 10:41:00

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has withheld over \$6 billion in federal education grants meant for immigrant and low-income students, citing concerns these funds support a “radical leftwing agenda.” The Office of Management and Budget claimed some money was used to assist undocumented immigrants or promote LGBTQ+ causes. This freeze affects after-school, summer programs, and English learner services, causing uncertainty for schools and camps. Advocates say the administration conflates all English learners with undocumented immigrants, ignoring that most are U.S.-born. States worry the cuts will harm efforts to support multilingual and migrant students and widen educational disparities.

The YMCA of East Tennessee faces a \$170,000 funding shortfall, threatening after-school programs at several local schools and impacting 149 children. Over 20 staff members’ jobs are at risk, and the funding cut could affect up to \$50 million in family support over three years. YMCA CEO Matt Ryerson urges the community to help fill the gap, emphasizing the YMCA’s vital role for low-income families needing safe childcare after school.
