Elon Musk leaving Trump administration, stepping away from DOGE
SUMMARY: Elon Musk is stepping down from his temporary government role, where he focused on cutting wasteful spending. Although frustrated with the “big beautiful Bill” for not reducing spending enough, his departure was planned due to a 130-day work limit as a special government employee. Musk criticized current spending as unsustainable, highlighting the need for deeper cuts. Discussions in Congress center on a rescissions package to make some savings permanent, though results remain uncertain, with initial goals of $1 trillion in savings unmet. Meanwhile, political attention shifts to President Biden’s condition, with Congress seeking further oversight and interviews linked to recent revelations.
Elon Musk is officially stepping away from his advisory role in President Donald Trump’s administration, posting Wednesday that his time as a Special Government Employee has ended. The billionaire entrepreneur was tasked with leading the Department of Government Efficiency — or DOGE — a Trump-created initiative aimed at reducing federal waste. The announcement came just one day after Musk criticized Trump’s legislative centerpiece — a sweeping bill combining tax cuts with immigration enforcement — calling it “a massive spending bill” that “undermines the work” of DOGE.

Flurry of trade deals offers relief for some Asian countries, while others wait
SUMMARY: U.S. President Donald Trump has secured trade deals with Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, reducing threatened tariffs to ease pressure on exports. A deal with China is still under negotiation, with the August 12 deadline likely extended. Despite some tariff relief, steep tariffs on steel and aluminum remain, and other Asian countries, including South Korea and Thailand, have yet to reach agreements. Economists warn these tariffs will slow growth in Asia and globally. The Asian Development Bank lowered growth forecasts for developing Asia, citing risks like trade tensions, geopolitical conflicts, and China’s struggling property market. Uncertainty continues to challenge regional economies.

A shift in steering currents will bring moisture from the southeast, changing storm movement compared to today. The Saharan dust, inhibiting tropical development, will keep the tropics quiet for the next week.
