Duke Energy’s continued reliance on gas keeps NC ratepayers on a rate hike roller coaster

SUMMARY: Duke Energy’s reliance on natural gas has led to soaring electricity bills in North Carolina, particularly following the January and February cold snaps. Natural gas price volatility has been a major driver of rising energy costs, with studies showing it accounted for over 67% of residential rate increases from 2017-2024. Duke Energy’s continued investment in gas-powered plants threatens to raise future costs for consumers even further, while hindering progress toward clean, stable energy solutions like solar and wind. Critics argue that the state’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gases is undermined by Duke’s plans and legislative support for new gas plants.

SUMMARY:

Ellen Webster from Hoboken, New Jersey, has spent over a decade writing 10,000 handwritten thank you notes, averaging three daily. Inspired by John Krulwich’s book A Simple Act of Gratitude, she creatively thanked a wide range of people, from healthcare workers to coffee baristas, authors, and local business owners. Ellen sometimes hand-delivers notes and includes origami hearts in each letter. Though many don’t respond, she cherishes heartfelt replies, including one from her high school teacher. Recently, she even wrote to Southwest Airlines’ CEO praising a kind employee, hoping he’d be treated to lunch for his exceptional service.

Ellen Webster has not stopped writing those letters.

SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla of California was forcibly removed and handcuffed at a press conference after attempting to question DHS Secretary Kristi Noem about military deployments in Los Angeles. Padilla condemned President Trump’s use of troops to target immigrants and suppress protests, calling it authoritarian. The incident, caught on video, has drawn criticism and support across party lines. Padilla emotionally recounted being detained and raised concerns over democratic erosion. DHS claimed agents didn’t recognize him, despite video evidence. www.youtube.com – WRAL – 2025-06-17 20:00:28

SUMMARY: North Carolina lawmakers are fast-tracking legislation to regulate intoxicating hemp and THC products like gummies, vapes, and drinks. The Senate bill, more restrictive than the House version, would ban sales to anyone under 21, limit THC content, require product testing, and impose retailer licensing overseen by the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Packaging aimed at children would be prohibited, and products would be banned on school grounds. Kratom and synthetic THC products would be reclassified as controlled substances. Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Governor Josh Stein support tighter controls. The Senate may pass the bill this week, but House agreement remains uncertain.

State lawmakers want to keep THC-laden drinks and gummies out of the hands of kids. The Senate and House are working on measures to limit the sale of those products.
