Government shutdown looms as Congress returns after monthlong August recess
SUMMARY: Congressional Republicans returned to Washington facing several key challenges. The most urgent is avoiding a government shutdown by September 30, requiring bipartisan agreement on a short-term funding extension amid disputes over spending cuts and foreign aid rescissions. Senate Republicans aim to change rules to bypass Democratic delays on Trump administration nominations. Legislation imposing tariffs on Russia’s trading partners is under Senate debate. The House continues investigating former President Biden’s mental fitness and pressures the Trump administration for more disclosure in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Additionally, attention focuses on oversight of CDC leadership changes and a renewed push to ban lawmakers from trading individual stocks.
