DeSantis provides support for congressional term limits in Ohio | Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis urged Ohio lawmakers to pass House Joint Resolution 3, calling for congressional term limits. The resolution proposes an Article V Convention of States to impose fiscal restraints, limit federal power, and set term limits for Congress members. DeSantis, who served three terms in the U.S. House, criticized Washington’s seniority-driven system and its disconnect from the public. The measure, supported by Reps. Bernie Willis and Riordan McClain, reflects a movement already backed by 12 other states. A recent survey shows nearly 80% of Ohioans support term limits, viewing it as a common-sense reform.

(The Center Square) — Citing Florida as an example, Gov. Ron DeSantis urged Ohio lawmakers at a news conference in Columbus on Tuesday to pass a joint resolution calling for congressional term limits.

House Joint Resolution 3 would call for an Article V Convention of the States to “impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and Members of Congress.”

DeSantis, a second-term GOP governor, recalled his three terms in D.C. in the U.S. House of Representatives as being instructive on why he supports congressional term limits.

“I always remind people that I’ve recovered from that experience, but that experience did leave a mark about how Washington works and how the incentives to do really good policy are just skewed away from that,” DeSantis said. “People get up there and basically they’re told, you got to pay your dues, you got to stay there and the seniority and the longevity, and people want that to be their career.

“We have members that have been there for 30, 40 years, including people like Nancy Pelosi. That is not, I think, how the Founding Fathers envisioned this.”

The measure is sponsored by Reps. Bernie Willis, R-Springfield, and Riordan McClain, R-Nevada, and is in the House Government Oversight Committee.

The resolution is similar to measures passed by 12 other states. According to the U.S. Constitution’s Article V, 34 state legislatures would have to pass similar resolutions before a convention could be called to possibly add them to the constitution if ratified by a majority of the states.

Rep. Heidi Workman, R-Rootstown, says a recent survey shows nearly 80% of Ohioans support term limits.

“Voters are tired of Washington politicians spending decades in office disconnected from the people they are represented or there’s they’re elected to serve,” Workman said. “They want change, and they’re looking for that change right now. The people are ahead of politicians on this issue. They see term limits not as a partisan agenda, but as a common sense reform that will restore trust and opportunity in our federal government.”

Political Bias Rating: Center-Right

The article primarily reports on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ advocacy for congressional term limits and the related legislative efforts in Ohio. While it discusses DeSantis’ position and quotes him as well as other Republican figures supporting the resolution, it does not overtly present an ideological perspective. The language is mostly factual, recounting the details of the proposed resolution, the sponsorship, and the historical context. However, the framing of DeSantis’ remarks, particularly the mention of “career politicians” like Nancy Pelosi, subtly reinforces a common conservative critique of long-term incumbency in Washington. The inclusion of DeSantis’ background and the supportive quotes from Republican lawmakers further tilts the piece towards a Center-Right tone, though it largely avoids strong opinion or advocacy. The article focuses on reporting the legislative process without presenting an explicit editorial stance.

SUMMARY: Apopka, Fla., residents may face up to 15.5% increases in water, reclaimed water, sewer, and up to 15% in garbage rates this fall. Mayor Bryan Nelson cited rising costs, including a $12 million upgrade to tap a deeper aquifer requiring costly ozone treatment mandated by the St. Johns Water Management District. The city emphasizes utilities must cover expenses without profit, maintaining funds for aging infrastructure. Despite rapid growth concerns, Nelson stated impact fees are among Central Florida’s highest and growth is managed. A public hearing on the proposal is set for Sept. 3, with new rates effective Oct. 1.

www.tampabay28.com – Frances Lin – 2025-08-18 16:30:00

SUMMARY: Florida Republicans are renewing efforts to lower the minimum age for purchasing long guns from 21 to 18, reversing post-Parkland reforms. Florida GOP Chair Evan Power and new Lt. Gov. Jay Collins advocate the change, emphasizing constitutional rights for those eligible for military service at 18. While the bill has passed the Florida House and has Gov. DeSantis’s backing, it faces strong opposition in the Senate, especially from Senate President Ben Albritton. The debate intensifies after a deadly shooting by a 20-year-old at Florida State University. Democrats urge focus on economic issues, but the proposal may reemerge alongside other gun rights measures in 2026.
