SUMMARY: Starting today, the Department of Education has resumed collections on defaulted student loans after pausing payments during the pandemic. Over 5 million people are in default, with 4 million more seriously delinquent. Federal student loan collections had been suspended since March 2020. Consequences of default include wage garnishment and tax refund interception. Borrowers can avoid or recover from default through loan rehabilitation or consolidation. Options such as income-driven repayment plans and forbearance are also available, though interest may still accrue. The resumption of collections follows a Supreme Court ruling that blocked the Biden administration’s loan forgiveness plan.

The center, operated under a $1 billion, 15-year deal with GEO Group, opened in May and has faced opposition over building permits and its role in expanding detention capacity.
