Darlington mayor campaigning for mayor-strong government to tackle city issues
SUMMARY: Darlington Mayor Curtis Boyd is campaigning to change the city’s government from a council-manager system to a mayor-strong system, aiming to gain more power to address city issues. Boyd argues citizens expect the mayor to lead and fix problems efficiently, which the current setup limits. Under the proposed change, Boyd would assume city manager duties and directly manage staff. Community activist Damen Prince and Councilwoman Sheila Bakis express concerns about the concentration of power in one person. Trump’s big bill advances in rare weekend vote, but conservatives demand more changes
SUMMARY: House Republicans narrowly advanced President Trump’s tax cut package out of a key committee in a late-night vote, with conservative holdouts demanding quicker cuts to Medicaid and green energy programs. Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged ongoing negotiations, aiming for a House vote before Memorial Day. The bill, which extends tax cuts and includes spending for border security, faces opposition from both Republicans concerned about deficits and Democrats criticizing cuts to Medicaid and food assistance. The proposal, which could add \$3.3 trillion to the national debt, also includes changes to the state and local tax deduction. The bill moves next to the Senate.

March for Babies in Florence celebrates NICU graduates and honors those still fighting
SUMMARY: The March for Babies event in Florence honored NICU graduates and supported families still facing challenges. Held at Brooks McCall Park, the walk brought together families connected to MacLeod Hospital’s NICU, which admits over 600 babies annually. For many, the event felt like a graduation, celebrating babies who survived the NICU and honoring those who didn’t. March of Dimes provides ongoing support, resources, and community to these families. South Carolina’s preterm birth rate of 11.6% earned an F grade from March of Dimes. Over $30,000 was raised to fund research, advocacy, and vital resources for NICU families in Florence.

Dozens walked with purpose to honor life’s smallest fighters.
The March of Dimes Greater Pee Dee walk took place this morning, bringing together families who have experienced the challenges of the NICU.
Families across the Pee Dee gathered at Brooks McCall Park, each one connected to Mcleod’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Masons family returned to celebrate a full-circle moment.
“Our experience was great we did a walk, 5 laps, here for a good cause and this little guy walked to,” Vivica Mason said.
