lexingtonky.news – McKenna Horsley – 2025-08-07 08:12:00

The case, revived after a court makeup change, follows lower court rulings against the law. Attorneys debated whether targeting one district is justified. A related lawsuit now challenges Louisville’s merger, raising stakes over governance structures in Kentucky’s largest cities and potential statewide implications.

SUMMARY: Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman urges state leaders to ban bromazolam, a dangerous “designer Xanax” linked to at least 47 overdose deaths in 2024. Bromazolam, often passed as prescription benzodiazepines, is potent and deadly, especially combined with opioids. Northern Kentucky law enforcement discovered its presence after a nonfatal overdose involving nearly 200 counterfeit pills. Currently unscheduled in Kentucky, bromazolam dealers face only minor charges, unlike harsher penalties for heroin or fentanyl trafficking. Coleman has requested emergency scheduling to empower prosecutors and law enforcement. The drug is spreading regionally, with fears it will expand further in the state. Authorities warn against taking any unprescribed or counterfeit pills.
