Congress helps fight against scams on senior citizens

Published

www.youtube.com – FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth – 2025-06-17 17:33:56

SUMMARY: Congress is stepping up efforts to combat scams targeting senior citizens as online fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated. The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to address international crime networks preying on older Americans, with lawmakers pushing for reforms to close loopholes and streamline anti-fraud efforts. Victims often feel abandoned when authorities claim no crime occurred because money was given voluntarily. Advocates argue that fragmented efforts—spread across 13 federal agencies—lack centralized leadership and data sharing. They’re urging Congress to implement sweeping legal changes. The FBI reports nearly \$5 billion was stolen from seniors last year, a 43% increase from the previous year.

Many of us know an elderly friend or relative who has fallen victim to an online scam. Scammers are getting more sophisticated, and now congress wants to help.

www.kxan.com – MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press – 2025-06-18 13:44:00

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors in a 6–3 decision, marking a major shift in transgender rights. Chief Justice John Roberts ruled the law doesn’t violate the Equal Protection Clause, using a low standard of judicial review. Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, saying the court failed to protect transgender youth. The decision paves the way for similar laws in 26 states. Critics call it a devastating setback, while supporters, including Tennessee officials, praised it as a victory. The ruling comes amid broader efforts to restrict transgender rights in sports, health care, and public spaces nationwide.

ERCOT leader speaks on the Texas power grid | FOX 7 Austin

Published

www.youtube.com – FOX 7 Austin – 2025-06-17 20:35:17

SUMMARY: The head of ERCOT, Pablo Vegas, expressed cautious optimism about Texas’s power grid this summer amid milder June weather. Despite an early heat wave in May, inspections of power plants indicate supply will meet demand through August’s peak heat. ERCOT is prepared, with energy coming from natural gas, wind, solar, and advances in nuclear energy, alongside efforts to expand battery storage. Vegas acknowledged challenges from population growth and data centers, but highlighted new legislation mandating backup generators at data centers as a “gamechanger” for grid reliability. While some remain skeptical, ERCOT believes power outages this summer are unlikely.

The head of ERCOT said the lights and AC should stay on this summer. The forecast comes after a statewide inspection of the power plants.
