Community members reflect on the death of George Floyd 5 years later
SUMMARY: Five years after George Floyd’s death under the knee of Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, community members reflect on the lasting impact. Floyd’s death sparked a global movement against police brutality and systemic racism, bringing awareness many lacked before the video surfaced. A college professor and student emphasize the importance of education and open dialogue in understanding racial violence and inequities in law enforcement. Former Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson acknowledges progress in policing but expresses uncertainty about future changes. The ongoing conversation, especially in classrooms, remains vital for fostering awareness and promoting social justice nationwide.

“I remember when seeing the video for the first time just feeling shocked, feeling pain, feeling hurt, confusion.”

When delivery costs as much as the food, don't waste your money
SUMMARY: Food delivery has grown popular for its convenience, but rising costs are making it less worthwhile. Drivers struggle to earn a living due to high gas prices, causing delivery fees to increase significantly. In some cases, delivery fees can nearly double the price of a meal. For example, a $32 order might end up costing $48 after adding delivery, service fees, tax, and tip—sometimes arriving cold. Additionally, some restaurants charge higher prices on apps than in-house to offset losses from fewer drink and dessert sales. If delivery costs equal the food price, it might be better to avoid ordering to save money.

Some restaurants charge a higher price for the same dish delivered versus what those who dine in pay.

Homebuying trends in the Triangle | N&O Report
SUMMARY: In 2024, baby boomers (ages 61-76) dominated homebuying, accounting for 42% of U.S. sales, surpassing millennials’ 37%. Boomers’ lifetime savings and home equity allow many to make all-cash purchases, buying dream homes, second homes, or downsizing while competing with first-time buyers. Millennials face challenges like saving for deposits and higher mortgage rates, delaying their market entry. This trend impacts the Triangle housing market significantly, bolstered by an influx of retirees aged 65 and older relocating there. The area is rapidly growing as a retiree hotspot, with many boomers purchasing larger homes for extended families. More details are available on the News & Observer website.

News & Observer Reporter Chantal Allam joined Eyewitness News this morning to talk about homebuying trends in the Triangle.
