College Park mayor admits to missteps in condemnation | FOX 5 News
SUMMARY: The mayor of College Park, Bianca Molly Broom, admitted to significant missteps in handling the condemnation of the Chelsea Gardens apartment complex, which was plagued by safety and rodent issues. Initially, residents were told to vacate immediately, causing chaos and accusations of illegal eviction. After backlash, the city extended the move-out deadline to the end of June. The mayor acknowledged poor communication and the city’s failure to prioritize residents’ needs. The property was recently bought by a new owner who earlier gave residents 60 days to leave. The city is now collaborating with nonprofits to assist displaced tenants, while the owner remains unreachable.
The mayor of College Park has denounced the city’s handling of the Chelsea Gardens Apartments. City officials told residents last month that the complex was condemned and they had days to move out. Then after the backlash, the city manager backpedaled and gave them until the end of June. The mayor is acknowledging significant missteps.

In Georgia, fireworks cannot be launched within 100 yards of locations like gas stations, hospitals, or government property, and they are allowed only until midnight. Buyers must be 18 or older. Richmond County Sheriff’s Office will patrol to enforce rules and Major Robbie Silas emphasized responsibility for fire safety. In South Carolina, only Class C fireworks can be used, avoiding areas within 100 feet of gas stations or public gatherings. Buyers must be 16 or older, and local ordinances, like North Augusta’s noise rules, apply. Check local laws before use.

Officials report average eagle nesting season in coastal Georgia, nearly 200 eaglets fledged statewide
SUMMARY: In 2025, Coastal Georgia recorded a 73% bald eagle nest success rate with 83 eaglets, including five new nests and 81 occupied, per Georgia DNR. The coast’s success is attributed to abundant food in estuaries, while southwest Georgia showed lower rates, possibly due to storm damage from Helene and Milton in 2024 and lingering avian influenza effects. The disease, initially coastal, has spread inland. Despite this, eagle populations have rebounded, with Georgia maintaining around 200 nest territories annually for a decade. The public is encouraged to report nests and support conservation through special license plates.

Senate megabill marks biggest Medicaid cuts in history
SUMMARY: Senate Republicans passed a tax and spending bill including the largest Medicaid cuts since its 1960s inception, aiming to reduce spending by $1 trillion over ten years. The Congressional Budget Office projects nearly 12 million lower-income Americans will lose coverage by 2034, mainly targeting those who gained insurance via Medicaid expansion. Key measures include strict work requirements for beneficiaries and restrictions on state provider taxes, which could destabilize rural hospitals. Critics warn this will increase uninsured rates, medical debt, and healthcare access issues, while GOP leaders claim no eligible individuals will lose benefits. The bill awaits House approval amid concerns over its impact on the social safety net.
