After using football to overcome childhood hardships, local coach deters youth violence with sports
SUMMARY: A local coach, inspired by football’s positive impact during his difficult childhood, now uses the sport to deter youth violence in the Grand Strand community. After losing his father at nine, football and supportive coaches became his refuge. He started a program with 135 kids, including cheerleaders, offering a safe, organized environment where children from diverse backgrounds can play regardless of financial constraints. The program provides scholarships, equipment, meals, and family events like weekly cookouts. Emphasizing respect, discipline, and teamwork, the coach teaches from his own mistakes to guide youth. The teams compete in the South Carolina Youth Football Association, fostering community and opportunity.
Thirty years before he became “coach,” Michael Parell was a nine-year-old boy in Levittown, Pennsylvania, waking up at his friend BJ’s house the morning of his father’s death.
“BJ’s mom kept telling me, ‘Michael, you have to go home,'” he said. “She kept coming back downstairs saying, ‘Michael, I’m serious, you have to go home to your mom.’”
Eventually, Michael walked back to his own house, where his 10-year-old brother, John, was sitting quietly on the stairs.

Swinney challenges critics to bring on the hate as No. 8 Clemson looks to bounce back against Troy
SUMMARY: Clemson coach Dabo Swinney welcomed criticism following their 17-10 season-opening loss to LSU, which dropped the Tigers from No. 4 to No. 8 in the AP Top 25. Quarterback Cade Klubnik, a preseason All-American and Heisman candidate, struggled with accuracy, completing 19 of 38 passes without touchdowns and one interception. Swinney described Klubnik’s performance as a “bad day” but expressed confidence in his bounce-back. Clemson’s offense was also hampered by a hamstring injury to key wide receiver Antonio Williams. The Tigers aim to rebound against Troy, favored by 33.5 points, while Swinney criticized both teams’ film performances.
