Cloverleaf Apartments tenants outraged after deadline passes
SUMMARY: The Cloverleaf Apartments in Kansas City have reached a 48-hour deadline for tenants to vacate due to severe health and safety violations. Residents faced rampant mold, pests, and unhealthy living conditions. Many tenants, including Wendy Herd, reported dire circumstances, with some units abandoned and filled with trash, dead animals, and structural issues. The landlord, NB Affordable, faces federal charges for mismanagement and fraud. HUD stopped funding the complex due to these conditions and is aiding in tenant relocation. Councilman Johnathan Duncan has been actively supporting residents, asserting that the situation is unacceptable and demanding accountability for the landlord’s negligence.

Springfield City Council considers rental inspection program
SUMMARY: The Springfield City Council is considering a rental inspection program to improve safety and quality of single-family and duplex rentals. Building Development Services Director Martin Gugel plans an 18-month refinement, starting with a pilot in the West Central neighborhood, which has many aging rental properties and blighted cases. The program includes a $35 annual rental license with inspections every five years, checking structural integrity, safety features, and habitability. Failed inspections incur a $50 re-inspection fee. The West Central Neighborhood Alliance supports the initiative. Funding of nearly $460,000 is allocated for 2025-2026, with a citywide rollout dependent on pilot results.

Joe's Blog: Settling into more heat (TUE-8/12)
SUMMARY: Tuesday in Kansas City starts mild with light fog reflecting lingering moisture. Recent rains were uneven, with pockets over 3 inches in northeast Jackson and western Lafayette Counties, but most areas saw under half an inch. A dry spell is expected through mid-August, with only isolated rain chances and rising humidity. A front early next week may bring rain and humidity relief. A ridge over the Plains will bring hotter weather this weekend and shift west early next week, allowing tropical storm Erin—forecasted to become a major hurricane—to recurve away from the US, though East Coast and Caribbean areas should monitor its path closely.
