92 people still unaccounted for in North Carolina weeks after Hurricane Helene
SUMMARY: In Western North Carolina, ongoing recovery efforts are challenging as Governor Roy Cooper reported 92 people remain missing following Hurricanes Helen and Milton. Asheville City Schools plan to reopen on October 28, while Buncombe County Schools have yet to set a date. New safety measures for FEMA workers have been implemented due to threats and intimidation against them, leading to a temporary halt in operations. Authorities arrested William Parsons for threatening FEMA staff while armed. The Department of Justice is investigating the threats. Meanwhile, power restoration continues, with over 4 million accounts reinstated post-Hurricane Milton, though sentiments on the federal response remain mixed.
There’s still a long way to go to get western North Carolina back to something resembling the way it was before the storm.
