Canyon de Chelly in Arizona will become latest national park unit to ban commercial air tours
SUMMARY: The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Park Service have approved a plan to prohibit commercial air tours over Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. The ban, effective in 180 days, will cover the park and a half-mile radius outside its boundary. This decision aims to protect the cultural and spiritual significance of the area to the Navajo Nation. Canyon de Chelly, known for its striking sandstone cliffs and prehistoric rock art, is one of the most visited national monuments. The move is part of broader efforts to regulate air tours at national parks, addressing safety and environmental concerns.

Palm Bay suspends school zone speed cameras again, this time through rest of school year
SUMMARY: Palm Bay has suspended its school zone speed camera program for the rest of the school year due to concerns about its accuracy, reliability, and transparency. This marks the second pause this year after complaints about glitches causing incorrect violations. The cameras, supplied by RedSpeed USA, detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph in active school zones and issue $100 tickets after review by a traffic officer. The city aims to improve the system to meet community standards before resuming. Violators can pay fines online, request hearings, or contact RedSpeed directly for assistance.

Lightning strikes tree just feet from Florida home: Caught on home surveillance camera
SUMMARY: A lightning strike hit a tree just feet from a home in Orman Beach, Florida, captured on a neighbor’s surveillance camera. The intense strike caused the tree to explode and catch fire, scattering debris, and startling the residents inside. The storm produced over 1,000 lightning strikes, with lightning temperatures reaching around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Fox 35’s meteorologist Laurel Blanchard advised avoiding open fields, metal, water, and especially staying under trees during thunderstorms. She emphasized the importance of heading indoors when thunder roars, as lightning can strike miles away from the storm. Fortunately, no one was outside during the strike.

A dramatic lightning strike in Volusia County sent shockwaves through a neighborhood Wednesday, splitting a tree just feet from a home and sending residents rushing to check on loved ones.
