SUMMARY: The Biloxi VA has teamed up with Soldier Strong to introduce a new type of therapy for veterans using virtual reality. This therapy, known as exposure therapy, helps veterans work through trauma by placing them in an immersive virtual environment that simulates past experiences. Trained psychologists guide veterans through scenes that provoke sensations and memories from their time in service. The treatment gradually increases in intensity until the patient no longer has a trauma response. This allows veterans to regain control over their traumatic experiences and communicate more openly with their clinicians. Psychologists are currently being trained, and veterans will be involved in deciding if virtual reality is suitable for their therapy.
