Bill banning camping on public property continues march through the legislature
SUMMARY: A bill in North Carolina, House Bill 781, aims to make it illegal for local governments to authorize camping or sleeping on public property. The bill would allow local governments to designate properties for temporary camping or sleeping with strict safety, sanitation, and health regulations. However, critics argue that the bill could burden law enforcement and harm veterans by diverting resources from Housing First strategies, which prioritize permanent housing solutions. The N.C. Coalition to End Homelessness and others oppose the bill, citing concerns about criminalizing homelessness and increasing incarceration-related costs. The bill continues through legislative committees.
