SUMMARY: A community meeting held by the Bear County Sheriff’s Office addressed rising crime and traffic issues along Highway 16 in the Von Ormy area. Residents expressed concerns over increased domestic violence, with 80 calls reported in 2024 by October, surpassing previous years’ averages. Homicides have also exceeded 2022 totals, many related to domestic violence. Traffic accidents have surged, with around 400 incidents, including nine fatalities since 2021. Distracted driving and inadequate safety infrastructure are key causes. Proposed safety measures include rumble strips and overhead flashers, estimated to cost $115,000 and $350,000, respectively.

Residents living in Somerset and Von Ormy know their areas along State Highway 16 are growing. However, with the growth, officials said crime is on the rise in both communities.
