August heat continues for the weekend
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Eric Zernich reports that August heat will persist through the weekend with highs around 93°F, plenty of sunshine, and some afternoon clouds. Humidity may increase slightly Sunday, but dry conditions continue. The 6-10 day outlook shows above-average temperatures across Louisville and much of the central and eastern U.S. Tonight features the bright August full “Sturgeon Moon,” peaking early Saturday, and the Perseid meteor shower will peak next week but be dimmed by moonlight. Dry weather holds through Monday, with isolated showers possible Tuesday and scattered rain likely Wednesday and Thursday, bringing cooler temperatures back into the upper 80s.

Hardin County Sheriff’s Office clarifies details on door-to-door solicitors in area
SUMMARY: The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office addressed concerns about door-to-door solicitors claiming to represent Terminix. Cultivating growth in horticulture: UK Research and Education Center reflects on century of impact
SUMMARY: The University of Kentucky Research and Education Center (UKREC) at Princeton has supported Kentucky’s fruit, vegetable, and nursery crop growers for nearly 100 years. Established in 1925 with a focus on variety trials, pest control, and soil fertility, UKREC expanded under key figures like W.D. Armstrong. Extension specialists like Winston Dunwell diversified vegetable and nursery crop research, integrating pest management innovations such as the IPMPro mobile app. Despite challenges, UKREC continues adapting to market, climate, and labor shifts, emphasizing cultivar evaluation, technology integration, and controlled environment horticulture. Its enduring mission is to provide practical, science-based support to Western Kentucky growers, ensuring future agricultural success.

Frankfort library back to normal after near-historic April flooding
SUMMARY: In April, Frankfort’s historic public library suffered severe flooding, with water engulfing the parking garage and damaging elevators and books. Executive Director Gene Roark described the scene as surreal, likening it to a war zone. Despite extensive damage and nearly three months needed to restore elevator service, the library remained a vital community hub. Staff implemented a drive-thru book service, maintaining patron support and morale during closures. The building, designed to withstand major floods due to its Kentucky River location, is now fully operational. Roark hopes the library’s recovery serves as a model for resilience in future crises.
While the water has receded and Kentucky’s capital city has returned to normal, it goes without saying that a lot of work was done to get to this next chapter.
