Ask Caray: What is the difference between periodical and annual cicadas?
SUMMARY: Periodical cicadas emerge every 17 years and are smaller than the larger annual cicadas, which appear every summer. The current cicadas invading neighborhoods are periodical ones, slightly delayed due to cooler temperatures but expected to increase as it gets warmer. Male cicadas produce a mating call to attract females, who lay eggs on tree limbs. The nymphs fall to the ground and feed on tree roots until they emerge again 17 years later. They likely use changes in tree root fluid to time their emergence. Interestingly, cicadas are safe to eat and provide a good protein source.

Few more heavy downpours possible Sunday
SUMMARY: Heavy rain and thunderstorms soaked the area Saturday, dropping 1 to 6 inches in parts of Jefferson County, southern Indiana, and Owensboro, causing flash flooding and water in some homes. While Saturday evening turned pleasant, the unsettled weather pattern continues into Sunday and Monday with isolated to scattered storms possible due to heat and humidity. A heat advisory is in effect for Sunday, with heat indices expected to reach 102–106°F. Monday may start wet with more storms. Afterward, conditions will dry out, but high temperatures in the mid-90s and triple-digit heat indices will dominate mid-to-late week.

Congress passes spending cuts, including $1.1 billion from public broadcasting
SUMMARY: House Republicans approved $9 billion in federal funding cuts proposed by President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), marking a legislative win. The cuts, passed via a rarely used budget law that bypassed a Senate filibuster, include $1.1 billion removed from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, affecting NPR and PBS, and about $8 billion cut from foreign aid programs. USAID suffered severe staffing losses, causing nearly 500 metric tons of emergency aid food to spoil. Critics like Rep. Morgan McGarvey warn that these cuts harm public education and national safety, while Speaker Mike Johnson indicated more cuts may follow.
