Asheville locals react to devastating flooding damage
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen caused significant devastation in Biltmore Village, now unrecognizable, as reported from the outskirts where mud and debris are strewn about. Structures have been damaged, including one leaning against a tree, showcasing the storm’s impact. Lars, a local business manager, expressed shock at the destruction of this once-thriving area. While the outskirts suffered greatly, downtown Asheville saw less damage, though residents reported losing phone service since the storm. Community members are rallying to support each other, providing food and spreading joy through music as they cope with the aftermath and work toward recovery.
Many residents are without power or water in Asheville, even days after flooding hit the area.

Death Row inmate in court to delay execution
SUMMARY: Byron Black, a Tennessee death row inmate scheduled for execution on August 5, is seeking to delay his execution in a Davidson County courtroom. Convicted for the 1988 shooting deaths of his girlfriend and her two daughters, Black’s attorneys argue he is intellectually disabled and therefore incompetent for execution. A neuropsychologist testified, confirming Black’s intellectual disabilities based on evaluations and DSM-5 criteria, with assessments consistent since 2005. Additionally, there is discussion about requesting the deactivation of a medical device implanted in Black. The court is reviewing these claims to potentially reconsider Black’s sentence.
