Another federal court rules against DACA, this time related to health care | National
SUMMARY: A federal court has ruled against the Biden administration’s plan to provide free health care to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, marking the fourth time courts have opposed the DACA program. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) redefined “lawfully present” to include DACA recipients, but this was challenged by a coalition of 19 states. The court granted an injunction, stating CMS exceeded its authority and violated federal law prohibiting illegal immigrants from receiving federal benefits. The ruling prevents more than 200,000 DACA recipients from accessing ACA coverage, with the U.S. Supreme Court expected to ultimately decide the case.

At inaugural prayer service, bishop pleads for Trump to ‘have mercy’ on LGBTQ+ people and migrants
SUMMARY: At the January 21, 2025 inaugural prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral, Bishop Mariann Budde called on President Donald Trump to show mercy to LGBTQ+ individuals and undocumented migrants. She referenced his belief in divine protection and urged compassion for those in fear. The service, focusing on national unity, was attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and others. Budde’s sermon emphasized unity across diversity, but excluded conservative evangelicals from speaking roles. While some attendees criticized Budde’s message, others praised her direct appeal. Trump, however, dismissed the service, finding it unexciting. The event included music tailored to Trump’s preferences.
