SUMMARY: Florida is experiencing one of its costliest hurricane seasons, prompting climate scientists to study the impact on Barrier Islands. Experts highlight the devastation in areas like Mannasota Key, impacted by Hurricane Milton, noting that traditional rebuilding is no longer viable. Robert Young, from Western Carolina University, emphasizes the need for smarter rebuilding strategies to mitigate future disasters, as climate change exacerbates flooding and storms. With record damages exceeding $250 billion, he advocates for a serious reassessment of infrastructure placement to avoid high-risk areas. The ongoing challenge involves protecting coastal economies while addressing increasing flood risks from severe weather.

Two hundred-year storm events brought record storm surge, rainfall and winds. The question some are asking now isn’t where people should rebuild, but where we should let nature regain control.
