1997 Kingsport cold case murder suspect shoots himself following indictment
SUMMARY: For the first time in Tennessee, a suspect in a decades-old cold case was identified using forensic genetic genealogy. George Robinson was accused of stabbing a teenager to death and sexually assaulting the teen’s mother in September 1997. Despite earlier DNA testing in 1997 yielding no matches, the case was reopened last year, and DNA was sent to a Texas lab specializing in genetic genealogy. Robinson was indicted for murder after nearly 30 years. When authorities attempted to arrest him, he barricaded himself and later shot himself during a standoff. He remains in the hospital.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Friday morning to announce the arrest and indictment of George Robinson, 60.

A marsh bird found in Tennessee wetlands is endangered. FWS is drafting a plan.
SUMMARY: The Eastern black rail, a small, secretive marsh bird with red eyes, was federally listed as threatened in 2020 due to significant population declines exceeding 75% over 10-20 years. Once found in Tennessee wetlands, it faces extinction from habitat loss caused by wetland destruction and sea level rise. The Fish and Wildlife Service is drafting a recovery plan to protect the bird, which inhabits freshwater and saltwater marshes and wet meadows. However, wetland protections in Tennessee have weakened, complicating local conservation efforts. Public feedback on the recovery plan is open until September 15.
