12 Florida bills sent to DeSantis’ desk. Here’s what happens if he signs them
SUMMARY: Twelve new bills have been sent to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, covering farm products, capital felonies, DNA testing, apprenticeship standards, construction regulations, mental health services, and financial services. Notably, HB 653 allows juries to consider crimes against heads of state as an aggravating factor in capital cases. HB 987 designates 20 new honorary roadways statewide, including one named for President Donald Trump. HB 6521 authorizes a \$10.8 million compensation for a car crash victim. Most bills will take effect July 1 if signed, adding to over 80 other laws already enacted this year.

Ex-Bucs wide receiver Antonio Brown facing attempted murder charges
SUMMARY: Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown, 36, faces a second-degree attempted murder charge after a shooting outside a Miami amateur boxing event. Brown allegedly grabbed a handgun from a security staffer and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, with one bullet grazing Nantambu’s neck. More than 1 million power banks recalled after some consumers report fires
SUMMARY: More than 1.15 million Anker “PowerCore 10000” power banks are being recalled in the U.S. after reports of fires and explosions caused by overheating lithium-ion batteries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted 19 incidents, including two minor burns and over \$60,700 in property damage. Sold online from June 2016 to December 2022 for around \$27, these chargers pose fire hazards like melting plastic and smoke. Consumers should stop using them immediately and contact Anker for a free replacement by registering on the company’s website. Proper disposal is critical due to fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

Suspended Florida sheriff marks 1 week in jail amid gambling ring investigation
SUMMARY: Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez has spent one week in Lake County Jail amid an investigation into an illegal gambling ring at Kissimmee’s Eclipse club. Lopez remains the only one of five criminally charged individuals still incarcerated. Codefendant Sharon Frederick, who bonded out recently, faces a possible bond revocation due to her fugitive past and pending federal charges, raising concerns she may flee again. Another codefendant, Kate Yingzong, has yet to be jailed. Both Frederick and Sheldon Weatherholt implicated the club’s owner, who allegedly orchestrated operations. Weatherholt claims he only helped set up the LLC to operate legally but was unaware of illegal activities.
Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez has spent a full week in the Lake County Jail, where he remains the only one of five individuals listed in a criminal complaint still behind bars in connection with an alleged illegal gambling operation tied to a Kissimmee nightclub.
