06/09 Ryan’s “Rainy Week” Monday Morning Forecast
SUMMARY: Monday’s forecast calls for a 50% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with a slight level two severe weather risk. Dry air still dominates, but a frontal system from the northwest and moisture in southern Mississippi will bring scattered storms through midweek. Temperatures remain hot and humid, peaking near 90°F today, then cooling slightly to the upper 80s later in the week due to cloud cover and rain. Heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding Wednesday through Friday. The northern half of the state will be drier and cooler, while southern areas face lingering showers into the weekend.

Mississippi Senators call for end to Biden-era flood insurance premiums
SUMMARY: Mississippi senators have called for an end to Biden-era flood insurance premium hikes, citing widespread economic strain. Since the program’s rollout, premiums on about 84% of Mississippi flood insurance policies have increased, causing thousands of homeowners to abandon coverage. In a joint statement, senators demanded greater transparency from FEMA, warning that if Risk Rating 2.0 continues unchecked, more families will be forced to forfeit insurance, leading to economic strain on neighborhoods and risking community collapse. They stressed that “time is of the essence” to address the escalating premiums and protect vulnerable Mississippi communities.
Senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith signed a letter that calls for halting further Risk Rating 2.0 premium increases and demanding greater transparency from FEMA.

Hanshaw Road Bridge repairs complete, expected to reopen after inspection
SUMMARY: Repair work on the Hanshaw Road Bridge in Ocean Springs has been completed ahead of schedule, officials announced. The structural repairs were finished recently, and now the bridge awaits inspection by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). MDOT will assess the repairs and provide a load rating for the bridge before reopening it to traffic. The bridge had been closed since March, when state officials ordered the closure until repairs could be made. There is currently no confirmed date for the inspection or reopening, but the completion of repair work marks a positive step toward restoring access.
Now that the repairs are complete, MDOT will inspect the work and assign a load rating to the bridge.
