Scam texts impersonate MoDOT, threaten action over unpaid tickets

Published

www.youtube.com – KSDK News – 2025-06-18 22:36:04

SUMMARY: Scam texts impersonating the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) are circulating, falsely claiming recipients owe traffic fines and face license suspension or prosecution if they don’t pay. These messages started appearing Monday and have triggered thousands of calls to MoDOT. The agency emphasizes it does not send texts to collect payments and is not an enforcement agency. Missouri has no tolls, so any message referencing unpaid tolls or violations is fraudulent. Authorities urge recipients to delete such texts and report them as junk. These scams aim to cause panic and prompt rash actions like clicking malicious links.

In the last 72 hours, another predatory text is making the rounds, counting on victims to panic.

SUMMARY: A former Baldwin police chief, Doug Shafer, is accused of improperly searching over 1,000 names in a criminal justice database called REGIS without probable cause over two and a half years. Many people searched were unaware, including residents near Shafer’s home on Marston Court. The list was uncovered after other officers reported Shafer, leading to his termination in December 2023 and the stripping of his police license by Missouri in June 2025. Critics question whether REGIS adequately monitors misuse. An attorney is suing for more transparency. Fox 2 obtained the list and offers viewers the chance to see if they were affected.

FOX 2 Now has learned the names of individuals who a former police chief is accused of misusing the Regional Justice Information System database. Hundreds of people were allegedly searched without their knowledge and without probable cause.

fox4kc.com – Delaney Eyermann – 2025-07-08 12:46:00

SUMMARY: Leawood, Missouri, has revised its street tree ordinance to better protect its tree canopy while addressing infrastructure concerns. Trees planted in 2015 or earlier can only be removed if hazardous, dead, diseased, or if construction leaves no alternatives. Residents and HOAs must obtain a Right-of-Way permit before removal, submitting a replacement plan that excludes prohibited species. New spacing rules require medium trees 30 feet apart and large trees 40 feet apart, with allowances for narrower tree lawns if protective measures are used. The city also launched a 2025 Sidewalk Replacement Pilot Program, offering free sidewalk repairs adjacent to newly planted trees with valid permits.
