In the poorest state in the country, millions of federal welfare dollars have been squandered and systemic problems remain that prevent the help getting to the poorest of the poor in Mississippi.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler due to the hazy and smoky sky, and lows will be in the low to middle 60s. On Thursday, high temperatures will be slightly cooler, in the middle 80s. There will be heavy cloud coverage and a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rain chance will be at 40% and overnight temperatures will be in the middle 60s. Friday will bring rain in the morning with a 20% chance, cooler temperatures in the lower 80s, and clearing cloud coverage. Overnight lows will be in the lower 50s.

164th Mississippi State Fair opens on Thursday

16 JPS schools face closure or consolidation

SUMMARY: The Jackson Public School District in Mississippi has recommended the closure or consolidation of 16 schools. The district is facing issues such as declining enrollment, facility infrastructure, and staffing. JPS Superintendent Dr. Errick Greene believes they need to prioritize and optimize their resources to best serve students and families. There are currently 465 vacancies across the district.
