Mississippi House unanimously passes bill requiring transparency in seafood labeling
SUMMARY: In response to a seafood mislabeling scandal, Mississippi lawmakers are advancing House Bill 602 to enhance transparency in the seafood industry. The bill requires all seafood, including shrimp and crawfish, to display its country of origin on menus and labels. This follows the sentencing of Mary Mahoney’s Old French House and its supplier for selling imported fish as local. A study found widespread mislabeling in coastal restaurants. If passed, HB 602 will introduce fines for non-compliance, starting at $500, with penalties up to $10,000 for repeat offenders. The bill is set for Senate approval and may take effect July 1.

CWD in Mississippi: Sorting fact from fiction
SUMMARY: Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a growing concern for hunters in Mississippi, with increasing prevalence highlighted in Benton County. The disease, which affects deer brain function, was first detected in the state in 2018 and has been tracked in 17 counties. Experts like Dr. Bronson Strickland and William McKinley emphasize that CWD can be asymptomatic for long periods, complicating detection. The U.S. Geological Survey reports CWD is present in 36 states, raising alarms for wildlife management. Although it poses risks, it’s not an imminent threat to deer populations. Testing harvested deer and staying informed is crucial.
