‘This is a public safety threat to our citizens’; Shannon County Commission terminates all deputies, Sheriff responds
SUMMARY: The Shannon County Commission announced plans to terminate nearly all deputies in the Sheriff’s Office due to budget overruns, with Sheriff Steven Hogan retaining his \$81,000 salary but no funds left for deputies. Despite staffing cuts, the county jail and dispatch remain operational. Hogan explained the office was understaffed and under-resourced when he took office in January 2025, requiring new hires and partnerships with local cities to fund deputies. He criticized the Commission for refusing budget amendments and claimed the cuts threaten public safety. A temporary injunction was filed June 20 to maintain staffing, with a court hearing set for June 23.
