Doctor claims new drug helps treat children with autism | FOX 5 News

SUMMARY: A doctor reports promising results using the inexpensive, generic drug leucovorin to help children with autism. Many children, like five-year-old Oren, showed improvements in verbal skills, language comprehension, and social understanding within days of starting treatment. Leucovorin, FDA-approved since 1952 for reducing cancer treatment side effects, helps folic acid absorption, which is often impaired in autistic patients. However, its use for autism is off-label, limiting widespread adoption. The prescribing doctor, Richard Frye, has published peer-reviewed studies and seeks FDA approval specifically for autism treatment, hoping further research will confirm its safety and effectiveness.

A neurologist in Arizona says the generic drug leucovorin help children with autism absorb folic acid, allowing their brains to develop in a more neuro-typical way. The FDA has not approved the drug for this purpose though.
