Mississippi Aquarium releases 16 sea turtles after cold-stun recovery
SUMMARY: The Mississippi aquarium bids farewell to 16 endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtles as they are released into the Mississippi Sound after five months of rehabilitation. The organization has been working for nearly four years to restore the health and recovery of these animals. After being flown in from New England due to a cold stun event, the turtles received medical care, including full physical exams, x-rays, and blood work. Veterinarians monitored their progress closely, and ultimately 16 turtles were deemed healthy for release. The community gathered to witness the turtles being released, and some were seeing an ocean creature up close for the first time. The sea turtles will now return to their natural habitat in the Gulf and beyond. Those interested in assisting in recovery efforts can visit the Mississippi aquarium website for more information.
This release comes after the Mississippi Aquarium provided levels of care to restore health and recovery for nearly five months.
