23 dead, dozens injured as tornadoes cut across Mississippi Friday night
It was a tough night for portions of Mississippi as at least 23 people are dead, dozens injured, and four missing after multiple tornadoes rolled through the state.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency confirmed a tentative death total Saturday around 6:20 a.m.
Morning Update as of 6:20am:
We can confirm 23 dead, dozens injured, 4 missing due to last night's tornadoes. We have numerous local and state search and rescue teams that continue to work this morning. A number of assets are on the ground to assist those that have been impacted

At least 13 of the 23 deaths happened in Rolling Fork, while according to one source, Silver City was “completely obliterated.” In Carroll County, three people died in one home.
Monroe County, home of Amory, also suffered significant damage with two people being killed.
“I would say 40 percent of homes in the town or are in the community are damaged to some sort,”…

JSU’s Tomekia Reed named Charlotte’s new head coach
SUMMARY: Tomekia Reed, head coach of Jackson State Women's Basketball team, has stepped down to take on the role of head coach for the Charlotte 49ers Women's Basketball team. Reed led Jackson State to their third SWAC championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament during her six-year tenure. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber praised Reed as a talented coach with a commitment to excellence. Jackson State University officials thanked Reed for her success, which included five consecutive regular-season titles and four SWAC Coach of The Year awards. Reed leaves Jackson State with an overall record of 125-54, including three consecutive 20+ win seasons.

Person of interest in homicide case arrested on unrelated charges
SUMMARY: Damien Peterson, a person of interest in a Columbus death investigation, has been charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a dwelling. These charges are related to an incident that occurred before the death of Jade Turner. Though identified in Turner's homicide case, Peterson has not been charged in connection to her death. Turner's body was found on Industrial Street, and the preliminary autopsy results are expected by next week. Peterson remains in Lowndes County jail after being arrested by deputies and Columbus police. The investigation is ongoing, with updates available on social media.

Fire damages 8 units at Ridgeland apartment complex
SUMMARY: A fire damaged eight units at a Ridgeland apartment complex on Old Canton Road. The fire occurred early Thursday morning and flames were found coming from the roof of the apartment. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Madison firefighters also assisted at the scene.
